CMPETITIGH IH INTERESTING STAGE VARSITY A LOWERS SOUTHERN'S COLOURS Saturday’s Rugby was played in squally weather, rain fading intermittently during tho afternoon. In spite of the wot state of the grounds and the greasy leather, some interesting football was provided, especially at Carishrook, where University A, maintaining recent improvement, made a great second spell spurt to beat Southern by 22 points to 13. The Light Blues were full value for their win against the competition leaders. Union, one of the up and coming teams, boat Zingari-Richmond by 8 points to 3 on the Caledonian Ground, and Dunedin, showing' something like their earlier form, ran out winners over Varity B by 17 points to 3, in tho game at tho University Oval. At Bishopscourfc, Kaikorai and Alhambra met in the . annual game for tho Murphy Memorial Trophy, Kaikorai romping homo to the tuno of 28 points to 0. At Mosgiel, Taieri defeated Pirates in a closely-fought game, the margin being 3-0. Tho competition has reached a most interesting stage, eight teams being separated by only four points. Flag points are: Southern 11, Varsity A 10, Dunedin 10, Zingari-Richmond 9, Taieri 9, Pirates 8, Union 8, Kaikorai 7, Varsity B 4, Alhambra 2. Varsity A and Varsity B, who were drawn earlier in the season, will meet on Wednesday. VARSITY A BEATS SOUTHERN In the main game of the day, at Garisbrook, University A beat Southern, the competition leaders, by 22 points to 13. Tho Light Blues faced. a deficit of five points at the interval, but, rising above tho wet ground conditions, they took, chargo in tho second half and rattled on the points, the rearguard handling tho greasy ball surprisingly well. The Southern forwards battled hard in tight and loose, hut Varsity had a decided edge in tho backs in tho second half, both for pace and combination. There were a number of casualties, several players on each sido having to retire. For University tries wero scored by J. W. Green (2), M, N. Paewai, D. Murdoch, and N. Lino, two being converted by Paewai, who also kicked a penalty goal. J. Craig potted a goal for Southern, and tries were scored by A. Chetwin and R. Nieper, neither being converted. O. Inglis kicked a penalty goal. Mr L. Millar was tho referee, WIN FOR KAIKORAI At Bishopscourt Ground, which chopped up like a stockyard, Kaikorai handed out a severe trouncing to their friendly rivals in tho annual Murphy Memorial Shield game, the match finishing 28 to 0 in favour of the Blues. Frequent stoppages were the order of the afternoon, when the “ ref.” ■was kept busy digging mud out of the players’ eyes. A. Cox (2), D, Burns, A. Austin, K. Calder, G. Williams, and W. Davie registered tries for Kaikorai, Davie converting two of them. R. Jafltray kicked a penalty goal. Mr J. R. Caradus was the referee. DUNEDIN'S IMPROVED FORM At tho University Oval Dunedin beat Varsity B by 17 to 3. Dunedin’s improved forward play carried tho day. Both sets of backs tried handling, but they wero not happy with a wot and greasy ball. The Dunedin team wore white ormlets as a tribute to the memory of J. J. Kilgour, a member of tho club, who was killed in action overseas. For Dunedin tries were scored by A. Manion and D. Rodden, S. F. Easton converting one and kicking a penalty goal, while Manion landed, two penalty goals. O. H. Marshall scored for Varsity B. Mr S. J. M'Connell was the referee. TAIERI BEATS PIRATES At Mosgiel Taieri scored awin over Pirates hy 3 points to 0, the game resolving itself into a strenuous tusslo between tho two packs, who were evenly matched. Pirates had their share of the game, but could not finish' off, tho only score of the game being a penalty goal for Taieri, which was landed by K. Giles. Mr J. B. Burton was the referee. UNION BEATS ZIKGARI On a ground already ploughed up by a curtain raiser, Zingari aud Union carried on in mud and rain. Zingari had the hotter of the play territorially, blit a sensational try by E. Preston late in the day settled the issuo in favour of Union, 8-3. For Union T. Freeman kicked a penalty goal and E. Preston’s try was converted by W, J. Glengarry. A. Watson scored an unconverted try for Zingari-Richmond. Mr D. Kilgour was the referee. SECOND GRADE, Port Chalmers 20, Wingatui Camp 0. University D 16, University O 3. THIRD GRADE.
