SHINING EXAMPLE
PATRIOTISM OF WORKING GIRLS CLOTHES FOR BRITISH CHILDREN On display in the Embassy Salon in Moray Place is a remarkable collection of clothing of all types which has been, made by the 70 girls working in the Dominion Manufacturing Company on the floor above. All the clothes are to be sent to the unfortunate children of Britain who have been bombed out of their homes. , , The work displayed! represents the united efforts of the girls over nearly four months. All their spare leisure time has been devoted to this excellent cause, and tho result is beyond praise. The mass effort Iby the girls was initiated and directed by Airs Hugh Sutherland. Some donations in kind came in for a commencement, but since then all manner of ways have been devised by the girls to raise the funds necessary to buy the -wools and materials required. The whole collection will go forward to Britain through the Lady Galway Guild. It contains over 100 woollen dresses of all sizes and designs, all beautifully worked and finished, dozens of jerseys, and woollen sets for both boys and girls; a large collection of baby clothes, all hand knitted, cosy pyjamas and nightdresses, socks, bootees, hats, etc. There are also boys’ trousers and braces, each with a piece of .mending material attached. Every garment is perfectly made, and of new material, and each has a message attached to it, and also the name of tho young woman who made it. There are also 10 blankets, built up of handknitted squares and then bound round the edge with a width of material, upon which is crocheted a message of good cheer from New Zealand. This evening tho mayoress (Mrs A. H. Allen). who is the head of the Lady Galway Guild Otago, will inspect the collection, which will also he on view to-morrow. Valued at over £3OO, tho collection clearly demonstrates what the united effort of a few enthusiastic young people can do, and it should prove an incentive to others. For June the girls of the company are making a drive for money for the Comforts for Fighters’ Fund, and hope to raise £SO or more to this end.
