"THE RIGHT SPIRIT"

A LETTER FROM HOME With the object of giving further evidence ol the spirit of tne people at Home, and witn tfie hope ihai such eviaence niignt in some small uegree influence auu accelerate our local war elfort, bnutli and Smith Ltd. have displayed in the window of their shop in the Octagon a note received from England, and the bundle of wallpapers in which it was contained. The note, which was from workers jn the pattern department of the Lees Paper Staining Company, Oldham,_ is short, and written with a cheeriness and humour New l Zealanders have com© to expect and admire. Upon receipt of this note a letter conveying the good wishes of the staff of the local firm was sent.

Subsequently a reply has come to hand, wtiieh demonstrates the intensity of the effort in this particular factory. Although a little wallpaper is manufactured, the rest of the factory is turned over to the completion of Government contracts. Ono hundred and twenty lathes have been installed, and the employees are busily engaged, seven days a week, in manufacturing aircraft parts, shells, and shell parts. In. addition, up to the time of writing, 80,000 stirrup pumps had been turned out, and 1,000 shell boxes were being renovated each day. The letter ends with a guarantee that any of our boys who might be stationed in that part of the country would be given a hearty welcome, and expresses confidence that, with an Empire like ours, Hitler and Co. would, before long, receive “a hefty kick in the pants.”
