HOSPITAL DAY

SPECIAL CHURCH SERVICES Hospital Dav church parades were held, yesterday, services being conducted at St. Joseph s Cathedral m the morning and at" Knox Ghurcli in . the evening. Members of the Otago Hospital Board and hospital nurses attended both services, which were appropriate to the occasion. At St. Joseph’s, in addition to hospital nurses, a party of V.A.U. workers was present, and High Mass was celebrated, at which Bishop Whyte presided. The sermon was delivered by the Administrator of the Cathedral, Father Gavin, who spoke of the influence of the Catholic Church on the nursing profession from the fourth century down to the present time. The parade of nurses at Knox Church numbered upwards of 250, and included a party of Red Cross nurses. The Rev. 1). C. Herron, in his address, dealt with the contrast between the conditions under which nurses worked to-day and those with which the pioneers of the profession had to contend. He traced the growth of the profession from the time of Florence Nightingale and spoke of the difficult training problems which had to be solved in out-of-the-way places. Solos were sung by Sister Lewis and Nurse Gardiner. On Saturday the annual reunion of Dunedin Hospital nurses was held. Mr J. W. Dove, chairman of the Otago Hospital Board, welcomed those present. He mentioned the fact that the lady superintendent of the hospital had recommended that a post-graduate course should he held for nurses who had completed their hospital training, so that these nurses could he of use if any emergency should arise in the future. ■ The following items were given;— Duet.
