ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS

STRUCK BY RAILCAR. A man was killed and his son seriously injured in a level crossing accident at Riccarton on Saturday afternoon. The victims were: Clement Reid, aged 41 years (killed): John Reid, his son, aged 14 years (injured). (Both were taken to hospital, where the father died some two hours later without regaining consciousness. The boy suffered injuries to his head and chest, and his condition was reported on Sunday evening to be improving. Mr Reid and his son were in a car which was struck in the middle by a railcar. The latter was a new one on a trial run and had no passengers. Mr Reid’s car was wrecked.
