NOTES ON THE RAGING

[Special to the ‘Star.’! CHRISTCHURCH, May 10. The Longbeach Hurdles was won decisively by Sir Frederick, who went to the front at the first fence, and, although joined by Flagman early and by Donadea in the last half-mile, he was never in serious danger. Flagman was done with five furlongs from home, and Donadea joined .Sir Frederick turning into the straight, this pair jumping the last fence together. Donadea made a faulty effort and lost ground, and Sir Frederick went on to win without any pressure. Dividend came from

well back to beat Fundy Bay for third money. Waka fell at the last fence after being well in the rear throughout. Lady Derby was responsible for a sterling performance to win the Eiffelton Hack Handicap. She gave the leaders, Retrogression, Rawhamai, and Eulogist, a considerable break turning for home, but with a fast run on the fence had the race in hand a good way from the post. Treasurer put in a final spurt to just miss getting up to Rawhamai for second money. Eulogist was a close fourth, with Guilder at the head of the remainder. After Swagger Jack had entered the straight in the Selma Trot clear of Native Man, Turret drew to the front and carried on for an easy win from Swagger Jack. Spencer Yolo, who lost ground at the start, finished fast, just missing overhauling Swagger Jack. Native Man was a length away in front of Cinchona. Don’t Forget won the Ashburton Handicap from end to end. He was four lengths in front of Not Out with half a mile to go, and had that advantage entering the straight from No Out, Cherokee, King’s Toast, and Prudent Prince. The last-named, a stable mate of Don’t Forget, put in some solid final work, but had no chance of getting up. Knight Commander, who was slow early, finished on into third place a length in front of Not Out and Cherokee, with Shikari and King’s Toast next. Hurry Girl, favourite for the Trial Stakes, was one of the first out and led all the way. She was followed into the straight by Force, Espionage, Princess Myosotis, and Good Scout, and was never-under pressure. The two-year-olds Espionage and Good Scout had a close struggle for second money, the former gaining a narrow verdict. Kernel was three lengths back, in front of Myosotis. Benevolent, a stablemate of Don’t Forfet, scored a meritorious success in the 'airfield Hack Handicap. He began well, but at the end of two furlongs had gone to the rear of the field. His chance then looked hopeless, but after Roman Son ap : neared to be the winner a furlong from homo, Benevolent reappeared with a telling run and got up to gain a last-stride verdict. Johnemby finished well to be third, with Valcron, who boat Scartcen by half a head, next. A. Anderson, rider of Johnemby, failed to weigh in and third place was awarded to Valcron, and Anderson was fined £5. Stabilise was always one of the leaders in the Flying Handicap, and enter",! the straight in front of Sham Boy, Gay Parade, Craiglea, and Auctor, with Airline, who was sent to the rear at the end of the first furlong, putting in a claim. Stabilise had the race won a furlong from the post, and Airline put up a creditable performance to secure second place. Mervyn Derby ran past the pacemaker, Great Waitaki, two furlongs from home in the Rakaia Trot, and carried on for an easy win from Misdeal, with Silver Flash beating the favourite, Loyal Friend, in the last stride for third money. Recluse, Top Hand, Bedrock, and Cintilla all failed to go off. The winner is trained and was driven by J. Bell, jun., who won the first trotting event with Turret. A judicial inquiry was held after the Flying Handicap into Airline boring in on to Auctor about three furlongs from home. Auctor in turn stopped Sham Boy, who had to be pulled back behind Auctor to make a run on the outside, which landed him into a close third placing. The stewards decided that Airline’s rider had done his best to keep his horse straight, and treated the incident as accidental. Tatting, a three-year-old by Inflation from Embroidery, dislodged his rdier just after leaving the birdcage for the Fairfield Hack Handicap, and after galloping a circuit of the course was remounted. He was taken back to the start, but just as he was being ridden into line be again got rid of his rider, and as some time elapsed before ho was caught again the starter despatched the field without him. It was later reported by the stipendiary steward (Mr C. F. Hartland) that he had recommended Tatting for the schooling list. This young horse had shown a good deal of promise before being raced, but has'always given trouble when paraded in public, and although he has been hooded in the last few starts he has not shown any improvement.
