Miss Vera Hayward is the first woman president of the Otago branch of the New Zealand Educational'lnstitute. She was elected at the annual meeting yesterday. 'The braifch has been in existence for 64 years. Mr C. E. Rowe, who has-been the Palmerston representative of Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. for the past three , years, has been promoted to the managership of the. stock department in the Ashburton- branch of the company, and will leave shortly to take up his new duties. D. Johnsen. of the Customs Department. Mr James H. Walker, whose resignation was recently tendered to the Dunedin Competitions Society Committee, has been elected a life member, the following minute being recorded;—“The members of the Dunedin Competitions Society regret that Mr Walker has found it necessary to tender his resignation as a member of the committee, with which he. has . been associated since 1909, having held the office of president and. having been the society’s hou. treasurer for a number of years. Members desire to express their appreciation of liis long and faithful service. His sound judgment has always been most helpful to the committee in its deliberations.”

Falconer ( Wellington), secretary to the Knight Commander in New Zealand of the Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, is visiting Southland to attend an investiture of the Order, which will' take p4ace to-morrow. 'Sir, Robert Anderson will be invested with the insignia and mantle of a Knight of". Grace, and Mr John Bell will receive the insignia of a Serving Brother of < the Order.
