FRUIT REPORTS Reilly’s and Bray Bros. Ltd. report on the fruit markets as follows: — A further shipment of Australian oranges was released during the week, and had to be repacked before selling. The waste was considerable. Pears are in heavy supply, iwilh cooking varieties slow of sale. Heavy supplies of Jonathans are now arriving ou the Dunedin market, mostly from Nelson, and tho price fell early this week. Sales have been steady, but hardly sufficient for the quantity Offering, and fairly heavy slocks were held in the markets at the weekend. On the other hand, Delicious and Oox’s Orange, were in short supply, the markets having been cleared of both lines. Cox’s Orange advanced slightly in price during the week. Choice quality tomatoes were realising high prices at the week-end, with poorly-coloured lines offering at fairly low rates. Grapes havo been in short supply, and the market has shown an advance In' values. Peaches and plums are still offering in small lines. Vegetables havo had a good inquiry. Good quality cabbages and cauliflowers are keeping linn in price. Other lines of fresh vegetables also havo a demand. Pumpkins and marrows are arriving in increased quantity, and values for these aro lower. Pie melons from the North Island are also sufficient for tho present inquiry. Swedes are rather in over-supply, and carrots and parsnips sufficient for the demand. Potatoes have tinned in values, King Edwards having a good inquiry. Supplies of Canterbury onions aro also meeting with a good demand at satisfactory values. Supplies of eggs have been extremely short of the demand, and a further increase in values has been made during the week. Preserved eggs also have a good inquiry. Owing to the Holidays, poultry supplies were limited, and values were firmer, good quality pullets having an inquiry. Wholesale prices are as follows: — Cauliflowers, 4s to 7s 6d a sack. Lettuce, 2s to 2s 6d a dozen. Carrots, 2s to 2s 6d a dozen. Peas, 5d to 8d per lb. Beans, 6d to 7jd per lb. Local potatoes, 3s 6d to 4s a case. Cucumbers, 4s 6d to 8s 6d a case. Tomatoes. —Christchurch, 8d to Is per lb; locals, Is 3d to Is 8d per lb. Cooking peaches, 3s 6d to 4s 6d a case. Plums, 10s to 12s a case. Pumpkins, 9s 6d per cwt. Marrows, 6s per cwt. Melons, 10s per cwt. Onions, 10s 6d a bag.

CANTERBURY MARKETS [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH. April 18. The Christchurch market has scarcely settled down since the protracted holiday period, but most classes of produce arc dirm, while for others the autumn demand as practically over. There is no further information about the price to be fixed for ■oats, but it is understood that when it is ifixed it will relate to white oats only. The original announcement related to all oats. The potato market is firm, but there is no variation in the price, which is £7 on trucks. Inquiries have been received from both Auckland and Wellington for supplies, this being unusually early in the season for This development. There is a very firm Tone about the local market, nothing having occurred to alter the previously-formed 'opinions of a short crop. Trade in autumn seeds is practically over, •the North Island demand having been supplied. Cocksfoot and white clover are be,mg exported in small quantities as shipping becomes available. While clover is piloted at Is per lb for good seed. Red clover is still coining forward. Some of the crop was caught by heavy rains, and the colour of the sample has been affected. Good seed is quoted to Is 3d per lb. MINING NEWS WAITAHU RETURN. The Wailahu Gold Mining Company Lid. reports that fho first wash-up in No. 26 ■paddock, in which elevating operations commenced on March 21, resulted in a return of 240 z sdwt for 27 shifts of eight hours each.
