RAPS HEAVIEST RAID

HEW POWERFUL HIGH EXPLOSIVES DROPPED MANY FIRES IH CENTRE OF CAPITAL Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, April 18. Last night's air raid by the Royal Air Force on Berlin was the heaviest yet launched against the German capital. An Air Ministry communique states that a number of very powerful bombs was dropped on targets in the centre of the city, and many fires broke out. The attack was pressed home, and numerous bursts were observed in the target area. Substantial damage was certainly done. The Home Secretary, Mr Herbert Morrison, in a speech to-day, said: " I have news for those who went through the attack on London on Wednesday night. Very powerful bombs of a new type were dropped on Berlin for the first time last, night, and were seen to burst in the centre of the city. The new Stirling four-ongined bomber was used in this raid. " Unlike the Nazis," Mr Morrison added, " we do not make any hysterical noise about reprisals. We have a plan, and Berlin was bombed according to plan. Let Hitler understand that we have as much right to bomb Berlin as he has to bomb London." Bombs were also dropped last night on Cologne, IJsscn, and other towns hi North-west Germany. The docks at Cherbourg were among the other objectives attacked. The German radio admitted that British bombers got through to the capital last night and started fires.
