LORD AUCKLAND DEAD
VICTIM OF LONDON RAID LINK WITH NEW ZEALAND (Pee United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, April 18. Lord Auckland is reported to hav* been killed in a London air raid. Ha was invited to New Zealand for the Centennial celebrations, but was unable to come. In a letter to the mayor. Sir Ernest Davis, he_ stated he would come to Auckland when the war was over. Lord Auckland was a naval architect connected with many engineering works on the Continent. He was • the sixth holder of the baronetcy. The second baron, after whom the cit? of Auckland was named by Captain Hobson in 1840, was made an earl for his services as Viceroy of India, but as he died unmarried the earldom became extinct. , A fine portrait of the earl, presented to,the city by the late Lord Auckland, hangs iri the Auckland' City Council Chamber. ... Lord Auckland was a flying instructor in the last war.
