M'Millan returned from \vcuaigiuu by the -first express yesterday. *.lr R. Herbert returned yesterday from -Wellington, whore -..he, attended the conference of tho Labour Party. Commander W. G. Davis, D.S.C., R.n., has arrived in the Dominion from Britain to join the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, Commander Davis has been serving in destroyers, mainly off the coast of Norway. Mr John C. Rowley, who would have been 97 early next .month,' died this week at his homo at Takapuna. Mr Rowley was a descendant of William Rowley, forester of the Royal■ Forest of Nocdwood, in Staffordshire, and The homestead of tho land granted to him in IG2O is still standing in the village. Mr Rowley was well known in the painting trade in Auckland and in Freemasonry. Mr R. M'Pherson, Controller of Wheat and Flour, left Christchurch for tho south yesterday. Better known under the nom de plume of John Guthrie, Pilot-officer J. G. Erodin';’ who for some time has been attached to the Royal Air Force in England, has been promoted to the rank of flying officer. In spite of physical disability he joined the Royal Air Force arid for some months has occupied a position of- responsibility on active service. ; .... Mr J. B. Robertson was a passenger by the express to-day for Wellington and New Plymouth. Mr J. A. Scoular left by the express this morning for Palmerston North. Staying at the City Hotel are Mr R. E. On the Wain’s Hotel register latest arrivals include Mr R. C. Kruse (Sydney), Mr A. W, Attkiusou (Wellington), Mr C. M'Counell, Air R-. Stuart, Air L. H. Boyd, Mr L.
