BILLETS FOR EVACUEES

REQUEST TO HOUSEHOLDERS EMERGENCY PRECAUTIONS SCHEME In the case of a major disaster such as a flood, earthquake, epidemic, or enemy action, it may at some time be necessary to evacuate .citizens temporarily from an affected area. Tho Evacuation and Accommodation Committee of the Emergency Precautions Scheme has this matter in hand, and it has been decided that the most expeditious and the safest scheme is to billet, for a few days, people from an affected area with residents in safer parts of the town. For this purpose tho safe areas have been zoned, and within the next few days a registration form will be handed to each householder in these safer zones. Householders are asked to fill in this form, which will be collected before the end of the month by members of the committee. The mayor commends this billeting scheme to favourable attention of the public, as it is desired to have as many available billets as possible scattered over as wide an area as possible, in order to provide ample selection. It is hoped that householders living in the zones chosen will willingly agree to provide temporary shelter for any less fortunate fellow-citizen who may be temporarily homeless. It is anticipated that billets are unlikely to be required for more than a few days on end, but even this short relief would bo sufficient to enable reorganisation to be effected. No doubt this community effort will meet with the usual generous ’response of the citizens of Dunedin. Householders are asked to co-operate with, the committee by having the forms filled in ready for the collectors to collect before April 27.
