FIRE SERVICE
EMERGENCY SCHEME COMPLETED PERSONNEL TO BE RECRUITED The Fire Committee of the Emergency Precautions Scheme organisation held a meeting last night, the chairman of the Fire Board (Mr W. W. Callander) occupying the chair. , Others present were Messrs F. C. Laidhnv (deputysuperintendent of the Fire Service), E. H. Ferguson, R. Wise, G. A. Lawrie, A. ißusbatch, J. W. Johnson, and C. W. N. Ingram. The purpose of the meeting was to lay before the committee the completed scheme for the establishment of an emergency fire service. It was decided to comply with the Dominion Fire Controller’s request to go ahead with the recruiting of personnel for the emergency fire service, and men for this purpose will be drawn from Mosgiel to Port Chalmers and adjacent boroughs and districts. Further details relevant to what is proposed for the sendee and the type of men required will bo announced through the Press in a day or two. Men will be acceptable who are exempt from overseas service, married men of military age with two or more children, men over military ago but not exceeding 50 years of age, except in special circumstances w'here fire experience is available, and single men between 40 and 45 years. The standard of examination will be only slightly less severe than required for the armed forces.
