BASES IN IRELAND

AN AMERICAN PROPOSAL LARGE LOAN IN EXCHANGE Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright NEW YORK, March 10. The New York ‘ Daily News ’ states that the Administration opened a drive to obtain bases in Ireland, which are considered vital to the protection of the increased flow of aid to Britain, in exchange for a loan of 50,000,000d0l to Ireland. Mr Frank Aiken, Irish Minister for Defence Co-ordination, is at present coming to the United States by Clipper with the object of obtaining American money for ships to sail to Eire under the Irish flag. Informed quarters say that bases on Ireland’s south- west coasts would be the only terms on which the United States would advance the cash. A group of prominent Irish-Ameri-cans has asked Mr de Valera to permit Britain to use Eire’s western ports and thus enable her to maintain the “ lifeline of civilisation.” “ Only if England survives can Ireland be' free,” the message states. “ We ask you to do this for the sake of Irish freedom, which our ancestors fought to win.” ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTIES ABOLITION URGED NATIONAL CONSTITUTION SUGGESTED WASHINGTON, March 11. (Received March 12, at 9.25 a.m.) Mr Mahoney, chairman of the Federal Monopoly Committee, suggested to-day that Congress call a conference of business, labour, farm, and consumer leaders to draft a national economic constitution that would abolish economic uncertainties “ which seem to threaten even our political system.” Mr Mahoney also proposed national charters for national business, steps to increase income for lower paid workers, reduction in tax rates for new enterprises, and more vigorous enforcement of the anti-trust laws. He said the only remedy to save democratic economy “ is to be found in making economy democratic. American people must choose between free enterprise and Government planning. If the former, it must be free from both private and public organisations.” CARDINAL SCHULTZ DEATH ANNOUNCED IN BERLIN BERLIN, March 11. (Received March 12, at 12.15 p.m.) The death has occurred of Cardinal Schultz, who issued a pastoral letter in 1934 condemning Nazi neo-paganism. SAVINGS CERTIFICATES NIGERIAN SCHEME A campaign for the sale of savings certificates similar to that organised by the National Savings Committee in Britain, is being launched in Nigeria. Like the savings certificates in the Homo Country, the Nigeria savings certificates cost 15s. They will bear interest and will then be redeemed on similar terms. A request for these facilities coming from Lagos, the capital of Nigeria, on behalf of the population, is another tribute to British administration and the determination of the local inhabitants to do all they can to combat the threat of Nazi domination. DARING EXPLOIT ANOTHER NEW ZEALAND D.F.G; LONDON, March 11. (Received March 12, at 10 a.m.) A New Zealander, Flying-officer G. E. Weston, has been awarded the D.F.O. The citation says: Flying-officer Weston was detailed to attack an enemy vessel lying in dock at Brest. Despite the failure of his starboard engine, and exceptional, searchlight and anti-aircraft opposition, he located his target and pressed home the attack with a full load of bombs. Returning over the English Channel, his engine picked up and then failed again, but skilful handling enabled him to land safely at his base. Weston displayed outstanding gallantry, skill, and determination throughout. GERMAN NEWS AGENCY NEW YORK OFFICIALS ARRESTED WASHINGTON, March 11.
