CROMWELL MEETING ARAVANE WINS BIG EVENT COLONEL ROUGE'S FIRST AND SECOND The weather was very hot for the opening clay of the Cromwell meeting. The attendance was good, the gate receipts being £lO better than last year. The track, though watered during the week, was hard and fast, but not dusty. The racing was interesting throughout the afternoon, and despite the downfall of several stronglysupported favourites the totalisator investments, £3,179 10s, showed an increase of £566. From a ragged- start Eastern Prince and Silver I>on were smartest out, and I hey led alon/ the hack and round the far turn from The Trier and Evemary. Approaching the home turn, Evemary dropper! hack last, and Silver Don joined Eastern Prince, Safe Light moving’ up into third place. Silver Don was first into the straight from Safe Light, the latter taking charge at the distance and winning easily by three lengths from Silver Don, who just hung on long enough to beat Evemary by a, head. Royal Money and The Trior were only heads further back. • • • • Sunny Dell, who was made favourite for the Upper Clutha Handicap, failed to go away, as also did Daisy May, Elaine Travis, Jungle Princess, and Parole. Little Glory and Kareen rushed to the front and led Bright Lass and Rapid Course over the first half-mile. Then Little Glory drew well dear, and at the far turn was followed bv Rapid Course, Monaco, and Kareen. This was the order into the straight. Then Ranid Course took charge and won comfortably bv two lengths from Monaco, who beat Little Glory by a length. Parole and " Kareen were next. • • • • Colonel Rouge was made a £3 1 Os bettor favourite than Aravane for the Crosnwcll Handicap, and they had the race to themselves. From a good despatch Colonel Rouge led Aravane out of the _ straight, and drew three, lengths clear racing along the back, with a big gap to the other three. Aravane joined Colonel Rouge on the home turn and drew away to beat him easily by three lengths. Petersham came with a late run to bo half a length away third, and Swordstick was nest. In the four-horse field for the Mount Pisa Handicap Irish Queen carried half the pool, but showed poor form. Rose Ileana led Islay Downs over the first halfmile. Then the latter took charge, and showed Johnemby into the straight. At the distance Islay Downs was in trouble, and Johnemby beat him home by half a length, with' the favourite six lengths away third. • ■ • * • Sir Digliion was better fancied than Parole for the Kawarau Saddle Handicap, and over the last two furlongs they bad the race to themselves, Parole just larding the belter lo win by a neck. Dcesidc, Undaunted, and Hones I Charlie failed lo go away, and Kareen and Sir Digliion led Elaine Travis and Sea Peter over the first

half-mile. At the far turn Sir Dighton was iu charge from Kareen and Parole, and thoy turned into the straight in that order well clear of Sea Peter and Sister Joan. Parole then joined Sir Dighton, and they had a good struggle to Ihe post, finishing six lengths in front of Sister Joan, with Karecn and Coastline next.
