TRANQUIL STAR'S EASY WIN DASHING CAVALIER SCORES MELBOURNE, March 4. Nightbeam had a long overdue win in the Elms Handicap on the second day of the V.R.C. Autumn Meeting at Floiiiingioii to-day. Seventh at the turn, Nightbeam finished brilliantly. New Warrior made a promising effort, and Alstons weakened to bo third. Teacake, one of the most consistent juveniles of the season, held oil a late challenge from Priraavera to win the March NurseryHandicap. Pyramus defeated the pacemaker, Kclos, for third position. Alcmena, unbeaten in three previous starts, showed pace iu the early stages, but weakened. Tranquil Star outclassed her rivals in the St. Leger Stakes, and, is the first filly to win the race since the success of Furious in 1922. Lucrative - had every show, but was no match for the winner over the final two furlongs. The pacemaker, Positron, tired, but had no difficulty in securing third position. Dashing Cavalier improved on recent efforts to" secure an unpopular ■ win in the Autumn Handicap. He finished fast to beat Mabson arid Saul. This completed the double for Trainer, J. M’Curley, who won earlier with Nightbeam. Laurcata. trained by H. Freedman and owned by Mr 11. W, M’Loan, compensated his connections for Lucrative’s , failure by winning - the Hopeful Stakes. Ho started from the outside rail and won narrowly. Murmuring, who was'seventh, made a* promising debut. Scarlet Toi, who was 'seventh at the turn, won the Bourke. Handicap narrowly from' a fast-finishing pair, Operatic and Queen Baccha. Phoineswas clear at the distance, but weakened.
