AUSTIN WINS FAST THREE MILE WEIR'S FIFTH WIH IN ROW A feature of Uie track and field meeting conducted by the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association on the Caledonian Ground last night was the winning effort of the New Zealand marathon champion, G. L. Austin, in the three-mile handicap, in which he returned the fast time of 14min 52seo from the 170yds mark. The run should serve as an excellent' pipe-opener for Austin, who is to attack A. R. Geddes’s 10-mile New Zealaud record of 54uiin 31 2-ssec at the Cale* donian Sports on Saturday. .Several well-known distance men were included in last night’s field, and the scratch man, A. R. Geddes, finished in second place 100yds behind Austin, who finished full ol running. The former New Zealand mile and cross-country champion, J. G. Barnes, who is training as an observer at (he Air Force station at Levin, also faced the starter, but lack of racing told its tale, and he retired before the finish. Taking the 440yds handicap in 50scc oil 33yds, R.
