WOODEN PLANES
TESTS IH AUSTRALIA In collaboration with Lite Division of Forest, Products of flic Australian Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, the New South Wales Division of Wood Technology has carried out a total of .14,1)00 mechanical tests with limbers since the war began, to determine their suitability for use in aircraft construction. The Standards Association of Australia recently issued specifications for three Australian timbers— Queensland maple, hoop pine, and alpine ash. Should it, ho necessary to construct timber aircraft the necessary information is available to designers for some Australian timbers. In support of the manufacture of timber aircraft, Mr M. Gosper, director of the Timber Development Association, said recently that plywood machines arc cheap to produce. Production can be speeded up, and output can be greatly increased. Plywood aircraft have as great strength as any metal type, and they arc more durable.
