TRUE-BLUE COVENTRY
' The welcome given by the people of Coventry, in spite of their great ordeal, I to the King when he visited them on November Hi recalls the words of the mayor when Queen Elizabeth tame to llio city nearly'-100 years ago. A purse of gold had been presented to her, and, accepting it eagerly, she said; “It is a good gift, an hundred m gold; 1 have but few such gifts.” The Mayor answered; “ An’t please your Majesty, there is a great weal more in it.” “ What might that bef “The hearts of all your loyal and loving subjects in this city.” To which the Queen answered: “ We thank yon, Mr Mayor, it is a great deal more indeed.” Afterwards the Mayor, remarking on the staunchness and loyalty of the citizens. pointed out that the expression *• true blue ” should really bo “ true as Coventry blue,” the latter saying having originated in the fifteenth century when the city produced a blue thread famous for the permanence of its dye. Kven in modern time, on occasions such as the mayor-making ceremony, local councillors wear robes of “ true Coventry blue.”— l Manchester Guardian.’
