NATIONAL SAVINGS
SPLENDID RESPONSE TO APPEAL PREMIER'S APPRECIATION [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, February 20. “ I would like to thank the large body of New Zealand citizens who have responded in such a splendid manner to the national savings appeal,” said the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, in a statement to-night. “ During the past months the principal aim of the campaign has been to swell the ranks of the regular contributors to .our war effort by getting people to open national savings accounts. To-day a notable goal has been reached—the first 100,000 accounts have been opened. “ This excellent result following closely on the announcement by the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash, that the first £1,000,000 has been subscribed through national savings, indicates that more and more people in the Dominion are realising the need for every individual to make some contribution towards the country’s war effort,” Mr Fraser added. “ New contributors are joining the national savings movement every day, and they realise, without reiteration, that a national savings account steadily added to is the best possible means of supporting our forces. At the same time I am not overlooking the 34,000 people who have purchased national savings bonds. They, too, are playing a valuable part, hut I would stress the powerful effect that can be obtained in marshalling our financial resources by regular contributions through national savings accounts. To all these people who have responded to the appeal 1 extend sincere _ grateful thanks for their patriotic spirit.”
