LARGE CROWD AT WINGATUI SPENDTHRIFT BEATS LORD NUFFIELD JUVENILE TO DESERT MAID The second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Summer Meeting was held in ideal summer weather, and before another huge attendance. Donadea (270-336), Superex (220-310). Flagman, who was a good favourite, was made a lot of use of, and failed under his increased weight to stay on. He and Point Blank made the pace very fast over the first six furlongs, then the latter retired, and Flagman went on in the lead from Airdrie and Donadea. As they’ raced to the far turn, Recollection, who had been running at the tail of the field, began to move up. Before reaching the second last hurdle Donadea had taken charge, and Recollection jumped into second place. Donadea led Recollection. Airdrie, and Flagman into the straight, but Recollection was first over the last hurdle, and won easily by four lengths from Donadea, with Airdrie a length and aha'lf further back third. Rue. who was a hot favourite, was one of several who failed to get away well and the places were filled by outsiders, each returning double-figure prices. Dark Olga jumped back as the tapes rose, and Kohara, Central Star, Irish Lancer, Gold Nugget, and Palo Alto were the most prominent. At the far turn Kohara, Central Star, and Irish Lass were in charge, with Gold Nugget at the head of the others. Central Star was first into the straight from Kohara. Gold Nugget, and Kurawhi, Irish Lass running off the course. At the distance Central Star looked the winner, but Gold Nugget finished very strongly and won by half a length from Kurawhi, who finished fast and beat Central Star nearly two lengths My Song was four lengths away third, then a big bunch, with Kohara and Nisi Prius at the head of them. From a good line, Divorce, who was made a good favourite on the win machine, was slow to find his feet, and Desert Alaid, starting from next the rails the first to break the line. After half a furlong had been covered both Southern AVave and Princess Myosotis ran past Desert Alaid and led her into the straight, where the leaders, ran wide and let Desert Alaid through. She was in charge at the distance and stayed on to win well by two lengths from Palfrey, who was slow off the mark, hut finished very strongly and beat Southern AA 7 ave by two lengths.
