ST. CLAIR AFFAIRS

IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION MEETING EXTENSION OF ACTIVITIES With 'the idea of extending its activities and making its work more widely known in the district, the St. Clair Improvement Association, at its annual meeting last night, changed its name to the St. Clair Improvement and Amenities Association. Mr H. H. Henderson presided, and the proposal was introduced by Mr E. N. Falck. There was far more work to be done in the district than had already been carried out, said Mr Falck. He mentioned the planting of a shelter hedge and the provision of seating accommodation along the playground, which he thought should be asphalted. Ice plant could be planted on bare cliffs, and ho thought the association’s work should be extended to provide more and more amenities for St. Clair. The association had already spent a great deal on the district, and he thought the residents should realise what it was doing. , The Chairman pointed out that the association had already spent well over £2,000 on subsidies to get work done in the district, with the result that between £5,000 and £6,000 had been expended for the benefit of St. Clair residents. The motion was carried. ST. CLAIR BATHS. Speaking on possible improvements to the St. Clair Baths, Mr B. Simonson said an attempt had been made to clean out the sand, but most of it had only been deposited in the shallow end. He was of the opinion that two short walls should be constructed to stop the sand from the quarry coming over. There were large barnacles on the rocks, and many minor accidents had occurred. The place had been allowed to go to rack and ruin, and any money spent on it lately had been wasted. Mr j. E. Callender said he thought a "lot of rot” had been talked by people who took little interest in the baths. The City Council spoke of the big loss incurred in the baths, but if it wanted to obtain revenue it should put them in a state fit to be used. Similar views were expressed by other speakers, and it was decided to leave the matter in abeyance in the meantime. OFFICE-BEARERS. The following office-bearers were elected; —President, Mr H. H. Henderson; vice-pre-sidents—Messrs E. N. Falck and M. A. Robson; committee —Messrs \V. Brinsley, H. JJ. Gillies, D. S. Chisholm, M. Burt, B. Simousen, J. M. Lowry, and D. C. Robertson; honorary treasurer, Mr H. H. Henderson; honorary solicitor, Mr W. Ward; honorary auditor, Mr D. S. Buchanan; honorary secretary, Mr F. L. M'Farlane. THE SEA WALL. It was decided to join with the St. Clair Life Saving Club in forwarding a joint resolution to the Ocean Beach Domain Board that both bodies were concerned at the intended action of the board in continuing the sea wall at St. Clair in its present form, and that such action would have a detrimental effect on the beach. It was suggested that the continuation should take of shallow terraces stopped well back from the high-tide level.,'
