SOLDIERS ON LEAVE

ENTERTAINMENT AT TOWN HALL FUNCTION TO-MORROW NIGHT There is to be a social and dance at the main Town Hall to-morrow evening in honour of the soldiers of the fourth reinforcements who are now ia Dunedin, and who will be returning to camp on Friday and Saturday next. All members of the reinforcement, together with partners 9r family relatives, are cordially invited to attend. An invitation is also extended to men of the Air Force. • The evening will be occupied mainly with dancing, to be followed by a light buffet supper, and at some time during the night the mayor (Mr A. H. Allen); will address a few words to the men* The upper gallery will be open during the evening to the general public., There will be no admission charge, nor; will it be necessary for soldiers to gef» tickets as hitherto. ■ There will be no send-off for the troops from the station. The train by which men will leave on Friday is th« 8.45 a.m. express, while on Saturday a special will leave at 9.5 a.m. Aa limited accommodation on these trains is available troops on leave are_ warned to return on the trains to which they were definitely allocated. The Returned Soldiers’ Association also proposes to entertain soldiers on leave on Thursday (to-morrow) afternoon in the club’s rooms in Moray Place, and all ranks of the Fourth (Reinforcement are invited to attend an afternoon tea at '3 p.m.

SEACLIFF SOCIAL. A bright function was held recently! in the Seacliff Public Hall in honour f of Privates A. L. Aitcheson, W. H* Galbraith, M. W. J. Lowen, H. D. ; Bell, W. O. Buchler, W. A. Goiy, and B. P. Henderson. On behalf of the local residents, Mr M. Beasley preseated each man with a well-filled wallet, while Mr A. E. O’Hara, the chairman of the district Patriotic Committee, also presented a similar gift to Mr W. Olsen on behalf of his son, T. Olsen, who is now serving with tha forces overseas. The hall was filled to capacity during the presentations, while vocal items given by Mr and Mrs K. M’Neill, Sirs Austin, and W. Graham, • all or Waikouaiti, were much appreciated* The accompanist was Mrs J. Wicks, while the music for the dance which followed was provided by the SeacliSj Band. The Karitane Maori concert party also largely contributed toward* the success of the evening. ST. LEONARDS FUNCTION. On Friday last, in the St. George Hall, St. Leonards, a social evening and dance was tendered Lance-corporal J. Wilson and Privates C. IBennett, A* Marr, and A. Robb, who are’ at present on leave. A short programme wa* carried through, and Mr P. Davia (chairman of the local Patriotic Committee) presented the men with suitable gifts and extended to them tha best wishes of the people of the district.: Mr A. Smith (mayor of West Harbour), Mr J. B. Bardsley, and Mr Hilt Scully (representing St. Leonards Tennis Chib), also spoke briefly. Supper was served by the ladies, and dancing was carried on until midnight. PRIVATE SEND-OFF. The Railway Bus Depot social hall was the scene of a farewell recently id honour of Private R. ,C. M‘Kenzie, : who was entertained by relatives, friends, and fellow-workers. Dancing and vocal items were enjoyed by thosa present. Mr T. Ballantyne and Mr H, Muir made presentations' on behalf of those assembled to Private M‘Kenzie, : who suitably replied.
