TO CORRESPONDENTS.
F. Percy.—Providing the precautions you mention are observed, the house should be perfectly healthy. If possible, the stone drain should be constructed outside the house to intercept the water, and carry it away down one side. It would bo bettor for you to *get in touch with the Department of Health, and obtain the advice of one of its inspectors. “ Miner.”—No record is held of the dates on which coal was first discovered in the various areas, but according to the * Minos Statements ’ coal was first produced in the Kaitangata mine in 1876, Shag Point in 1863, Nightcaps in 1881, and Saddle Hill (Green Island) in 1870. Discovery in each case probably antedated this by a few years, and in some or all cases coal was probably dug in a small way. It is claimed, for instance, that coal was being dug in Green Island in 1865.
