The well-known light-harness reinsman, D. C. Watts, whoso name was recently drawn in the ballot, volunteered for service early in the war, but was turned down. From a Paper Money Mare. Gold Money Song, winner of the Takapuna Plate last Saturday, is a three-year-old colt bv Hunting Song from God Money, by Paper Money from the Nainki mare Miss Ethel. Consistent Stake Winner. Mona’s Song, winner of the Southland Cup yesterday, is a seven-year-old mare by Songbird from Kyleboa, and has been a very consistent stake winner for her ownertrainer, E. W. Ellis. Faster Run Race. The Birthday Handicap at Forbury Park was run at a much faster clip than the principal race last Saturday. The first halfmile took 69sec (as against Imm 12 4-ssec), mile, 2rain 16 l-ssec (2min 22 l-Sse.c), mile and a-half, 3rain 21 l-ssec (3min 30 3-ssec), and full distance, 4rain 22sec (4mm 33 l-ssec).

Form Works Out. It was a coincidence that King Potts, Loyal Key, Peter Smith, and Ringtrue, whose numbers were hoisted by the judge after the Birthday Handicap had been run yesterday, should have finished in the samo order in the King George Handicap last Saturday. New Scales for Riccarton. It is reported that the Canterbury Jockey Club is going to replace the counter-bal-anced scales that have been in use at Riccarton for many years 'with, up-to-date beam scales. Tins decision may have been the result of the rider of Little Robin not being able to draw weight after running third in the New Zealand Cup this month. Accident at Forbury Park. About half the field was interfered with when imperial Jade put one of her feet through Rerekohoa’s sulky wheel. This caused tho latter to stop very suddenly, and Gallant Chief, Gallintord and Ghandi to fall. Fortunately, none of the drivers was seriously hurt. An inquiry was held afterwards, and the Judicial Committee found that none of the drivers was to blame, and no further action was taken.

Totalisator Accommodation Taxed. Totalisator accommodation' at -Forbury Park yesterday afternoon was taxed to its utmost, and despite the fact that the intervals between races were extended to 40 minutes, the machine was 26 minutes late in closing on the concluding event. The increase, £16,951 tor the two days, was a record for this course. Fast Times. Visiting owners and trainers were enthusiastic in their praise of the track at Forbury Park yesterday, when it was much faster than last Saturday. The following were the winners’ assessments and times; — Certissimus (3min 40sec), 3rain 20 l-sscc; Gleam (3min 43sec), 3min 23 2-ssec; Happy Man (3min 38sec), 3min 21 2-ssec; King Potts (4min 30sec), 4min 22sec; Kid Wolf (3tnin 15sec), 3min 1 2-ssee; Toceetic (3min 31see), 3min 20 3-ssec; Bush Laddie (3min 46sec), 3min 37 2-ssec; and Peter Smith (2min 47sec), 2min 42sec.

A Champion, Certissimus was handicapped lo give away 60yds in his race yesterday, but did not move off smartly, and before he got into his stride the leader must have been nearly twice that distance in front of him. Certissimus’s driver showed no anxiety, and it was not until after he had commenced the last mile that he let the Quite Sure colt run along. He was timed to cover the last mile in 2min 9 l-ssec, last half in 65 l-sscc. and was racing up at the finish to record 32sec for the final two furlongs. Certissimus is a level-beaded horse, and it will not surprise those who have seen him racing if he smashes many more records during his career. Well-deserved Compliment. There was a very pleasant interlude during the racing at Forbm-y Park yesterday afternoon, when the stewards and a number of members of tho club gathered to record their appreciation of the valuable services rendered by tho president (Mr B. 3. Irwin) during the 17 years ho has occupied that position. Mr John M’Donald, one of the oldest members of the club, referred to the long and good service of Mr Irwin to the club. He also mentioned the help Mrs Irwin had given in carrying out the social side of the work, and then asked Mr Irwin to accept a cheque, subscribed by the members. Mr Irwin briefly replied, paying a tribute to the work of the stewards and committee.
