MADE IN NEW ZEALAND.—This mammoth pipe, the largest ever made in New Zealand, is the first of over 700 which are being built to carry water over a stretch of difficult country encountered by the P.W.D. in constructing a gigantic race along the Canterbury foothills from the Rangitata to the Rakaia River for irrigation and hydro-electric purposes. The pipe. 12ft in diameter, weighs 28 tons, and is sufficiently largo to permit a car _to pass through it with yards to spare. It was recently placed in position by the Hon. Robt. Semple who is standing in the centre of the bottom row of the group.
