QUEEN CARNIVAL
ARMY AND NAVY REPRESENTATIVES IMPOSSIBLE TO NOMINATE PRIORITY It is unlikely that the positions of the Army Queen (Miss Airini Grennell) and the Navy Queen (Miss Jessie M'Lennan) will be known until just before the crowning ceremony on November 16. A largo amount of money from the various art unions and a few other sources is still to come in, and although this cannot possibly affect the position of the Air Force Queen (Miss Mary Pratt), the position of either the Army or Navy Queen depends entirely on the issue in this respect. Members of the executive spoken to tills morning stated that it was quite impossible to forecast the issue as it applied to the Army and Navy Queens, and that it would be nearly a fortnight before the position would be clarified. As it was expressed in one quarter, “ We would like to know as much as anyone else, but we have no idea at present.” UGLY MAN COMPETITION. The ugly man competition conducted by the Food Group Sub-committee in aid of Navy Queen funds will be decided this week. The wide area over which ballot papers have been distributed denotes the interest which, this contest has occasioned, and, incidentally, has added considerably to the work of collecting and counting the voting papers. The latest count discloses the position of candidates as follows: J. P. Himburg, Joe Marks, R. O. Greenslade, R. S. Glendining, Monty Gilroy, A. A. Paape, T. Cornish, W. E, Bell, Jeffrey Barnett, Frank Tyson. PRINCESS STELLA’S FAIR. The community sing and celebrity concert organised by the Mosgiel Business Men’s Association provided a fitting finale for Mosgiel’s efforts in aid of the Air Force Queen funds. The mayor (Mr W. P. Hartstonge) welcomed Miss Mary Pratt on her official visit to Mosgiel. The queen was accompanied by Countesses Miss J. Howell and Miss Lexie Matheson and officials from the Dunedin Executive Committee. Escorts were provided by Squad-ron-leader Steadman, Flight-lieutenant Burbidge, and Flying-officer Lewis, and a guard of honour from the R.N.Z. Air Force lined the- aisle as the party proceeded down the hall to the stage. Miss Pratt charmingly responded to the ovation tendered her. and later on the flag appeal, launened while she sang, brought in over £24. During the evening Miss Pratt, the performers, and officials autographed an album which brought £5 when put up for auction. SHEEP-GUESSING. The sheep-guessing competition held at Tahuna Park on Saturday resulted in Mr J. K. Brenssell (Qutram) guessing the correct weight, 1451 b.
