RECITAL ON THURSDAY NICHT Ignaz Friedman, who will give a piano-, forte recital in the Concert Chamber of the Dunedin Town Hall on Thursday night, was born at Podgorze, near Cracow, on February 14, 1882. His father, who was a violinist and a musical director, also played the piano. Friedman, sen., gave his son his first lessons, and the boy soon developed into a “ wonder child.” After the customary academic work Iguaz Friedman entered the University of Leipzig, where he studied history undfer Adler and composition under Dr Biemann, in the same class as Max Begcr. He next studied the piano for three years under the great Leschetiszky in Vicuna, aud became one of his favourite pupils. Friedman began his real career as a virtuoso in 1904, and since then has played in live continents, gathering laurels everywhere. He appeared under the more notable conductors of, his day, including Uichter, Nikisch, Colonne, Saiut-Saens, Mengolbergst Safanoff, and Gabriel Pierne. Ho has a notable array of original compositions to his credit, mostly for the piano, as well as songs and instrumental works. He is the editor of an authoritative edition of Chopin’s works, as well as those of Bach, Liszt, Schumann, and Mendelssohn. In his recent Australian tour Friedman was acclaimed everywhere. This was to be expected, because this noted Polish artist has few peers among present-day pianists. The recital is being given under arrangement with the National Patriotic Fund Board, and the proceeds will be devoted to the Otago Provincial Patriotic Fund. The box plan is at Begg’s,
