INTERSCHOOLS ATHLETES

EIGHT RECORDS BROKEN HIGH STANDARD DF PERFORMANCE WAITAKI RETAINS SENIOR SHIELD need be no fear of the future of athletics in this province so long as athletes are being moulded of the calibre of those who contested the fourteenth championship sports of the Otago and Southland secondary schools at the University Oval, Logan Park, on Saturday afternoon. Eight new records were established and one other was equalled. Performances throughout were of a high standard, fully in keeping with that of previous years. During the afternoon a breeze sprang up, but conditions for the greater part left little to be desired—the tracks were very fast and the day pleasantly warm. Four new records were set in the senior division, in which .Waitaki Boys’ High School retained possession of the E. L. Macassey Shield, M’Glashan College again being runnera-up. One of the outstanding performers for Waitaki was C. C. Steel, winner of the lOOys in 10 4-ssec into the breeze and the 220yds in 23 3-ssec, which was one-fifth of a second faster than the mark made by J. Sutherland (present national 100yds champion) in 1937. Steel, a, fine beginner and powerful strider, shaded the existing record twice during the day, for in a heat in the morning his time was 23 l-ssec.

R. Elvidge, the brilliant M'Glashan College quarter-miler, equalled Sutherland’s 440yds senior record of 54 3-sseo in the morning, and, retaining the title, set a new time of 53 4-ssec in the final with an easy wm in most impressive fashion. Another M Glashan boy, E. W, M’Douail, registered one of the best performances of the day in winning the mile in the fast time of 4mm 47 2-ssec, only 3scc outside J. W Berry’s record. M’Douall, displaying pleaslnff stylo and sound racing judgment, finished like a real champion. G. B. Brown a strong runner from Waitaki, won the half-mile in the smart time’ of 2min 8 3- after leading all the way. . 114 Glashan College won the mile relay as it liked in 3min 53 l-ssec, which was 2 4- bettor than its own record, established when it won last year at Invorcar-

Easily the outstanding field effort of the day was that of I. Watson, of Southland Boys High School, in the high jump, in which, showing the advantage of the use of a definite style, the Western roll- in his case, he cleared the bar at sft 6-iin to improve upon the existing figures by half an inch. J

.No records were broken in the intermediate (under 16|) section, hut performances generally were well up to standard, and the Oswald M. Smith. Shield was won by Southland Boys’ High School, with Waitaki Boys High School as runners-up. One of the best performances in this division was that of P. Bennett (St. Kevin’s College), who won the 440yds in ,56 1-Ssec. The junior (under 15) division produced several particularly impressive efforts, four new records being established and one equalled. _ W. E. Mackintosh, the Otago B.H.S. junior champion, won two titles and set two new records—2s 2-ssec for the 220yds and 17ft 9jin for’ the long jump. He also filled second place to another good Otago sprinter in E. J. Carr in the 100yds, won in 11 4-ssec. Carr, who was second in the furlong, also broke the record in a heat in this event, in which ho returned 25 2-ssec.

B Scnnlnn, the promising Christian isi-oi hers High School boy, equalled L. V. Blaikic’s 440yds junior record of 56 2-sscc, m , spite of the fact that he had a runaway win. Winning the 440yds relay in 51 2-ssec, Otago Boys’ High School lowered the record by 3-ssec, and P. C. Walker (King’s High School) cleared the bar in the junior high jump at sft 3in, an outstanding effort for a new record. I. M’Kcnzie (Southland Technical College), who cleared 4ft lliu for second place, equalled the previous record. A large crowd enjoyed a well-run meeting, qne of the most sncctacular features of which was the inarch past, with which the proceedings in the afternoon were begun, and which was carried out under the direction of Mr J. P. Northev. The organisation of the fixture was carried out by officials of the Otago Centre, N.Z.A'.A.A.. headed-by the president (Mr C. W. Clark'., sports secretary (Mr G. L. Austin), and secretary (Mr C. A. Pope). Mr L. F, Gerrio was Press steward. A special wont of mention should he made, of the starter (Mr H. J. C. M’Kenzie), whose work was of a high order.
