TWO RECORDS BROKEN

INTERSCHOOLS ATHLETIC TITLES HIGH STANDARD IN PRELIMINARIES After light rain conditions were ideal for the preliminaries. in the fourteenth championship sports of the Otago and Southland secondary schools on the University Oval at Logan Park this morning, the weather being warm and the track fast, an absence of wind being further conducive to good performances. The representative nature of the meeting was indicated by the fact that there were 185 competitors from 11 schools, drawn from all parts of Otago, Southland, and North Otago Performances were of a very high standard, prospects being, for very keen competition in the afternoon. Records were- broken in two events, and in another the tabled mark was equalled. The first record to fall was in the 220yds junior championship, in which E. J. Carr (Otago Boys’ High School) won his heat in 25 2-ssec, one-fifth of a second faster than L. V. Blaikie’s mark set up in 1937. In a subsequent heat of the same event W. E. Mackintosh, the junior champion of Otago Boys’ High School, also returned 25 2-ssec, to lower the existing mark and equal the time put up by his schoolmate. Mackintosh fought out a spirited finish with B. Scaulan (Christian Brothers’ High School). Scanlan gave further taste of his prowess in the junior 440yds, in which his 58 3-ssec was easily the fastest of the morning heats. Another record was lowered in the 220yds senior championship, in which the titleholder, C. C. Steel, won his heat in the sparkling time of 23 l-ssec, three-fifths of a second faster than the tabled mark,, standing to the credit of the present national 100yds champion, J. Sutherland, whose performance was put up at Oamaru in 1937. In another heat 11. Elvidge (M'Glashan College) won in 24 l-ssec, in spite of the fact

that he shed a shoe when finishing up the straight. Elvidge equalled Sutherland’s senior 440yds record of 54 3-Sseo in a heat, Elvidge (holder of the title) finishing most! impressively. P. J. Robertson (Otago Boys’ High School) returned SSsec in win* uing his heat. Several field events were decided during the morning, D. Murdoch (Eng’s High School) winning the senior broad jump with a good effort of 19ft s£in. The senior; 121 b shot putt was won by J. Skinner, of Christian Brothers’ High School, with &, heave of 36ft 2iu. While times in the intermediate events were not so outstanding comparatively as in the other divisions, F. Bennett (St. Kevin’s College) won a heat of the 440yds in 57 3-sseo. Results (C. 8., Christian Brothers’ High School; Tech., Dunedin Technical High School; J. M‘G., John M’Glashan'College; K.
