Hon. Adam Hamilton, Leader of th« Opposition,, was a passenger by th« through express from Invercargill thU morning bound for Wellington. Mr A. G. Homer left by this morning’s express for Wellington to attend a meeting of the Bands’ Association. Sir Janies Hutchison, editor of the ‘ Otago Daily Times,’ and Mr W. F. Alexander, editor of the ‘Evening Star,’ returned from Wellington yesterday after attending a conference of editors with Ministers of the Crown regarding war publicity. Mr J. Noel Beckett left yesterday for Wellington to attend an executive meeting of the Trained Masseurs’ Association. The residents of East Taieri farewelled Sergeant J. F. Murray and Sapper F. T. Beale at a social evening. A programme of songs was presented by Mesdames J. Douglas and M‘Millan, Miss Stoddart, and Messrs W. Bathgate and G. Hunter. Mrs B. Watt played the accompaniments, and Messrs Gough and Watt supplied the music for the dances. Mr A. Blair was M.C.. Mr A. Milter (chairman of the East Taieri Patriotic Committee) presided, and was supported by Mr Geo. Stevenson (chairman of the Taieri County Council). The departing guests were each presented with a wristlet watch suitably inscribed with best wishes from East Taieri friends.
Mr C. E. Brian, deputy chief postmaster at Dunedin, who has been promoted to the position of deputy chi el postmaster at Wellington, was last night met by a large gathering ol postal officers and presented with a smoker’s companion and a barometei as a token of their esteem and best wishes for his future. Mr N. R. M’lssac, chief postmaster, who is on leave at present, made the presentation, and Mr V. C. Lawn, inspector, who is acting chief postmaster, was also present. These two officers and the heads of various branches, made eulogistic reference to Mr Brian’s service, and to his happy relations with his fellow-officers. Mr Brian loaves by the express on Monday morning for Wellington. Guests at the Grand Hotel are Mr and Mrs C. M'Artney (Rangoon, Burma), Mr and Mrs Illingworth Mackay (Auckland), JMr and Mrs C. A. Cullman, Mr R. M. Simmers (Christchurch), Mrs R. Binney, Miss H. Binncy (Invercargill), Mr R. A. Scott (Gore). Miss Barbara Court, Mr R. Chatfield (Auckland), Mr A. Leslie Wall (Wellington), Mr and Mrs W. D. Young (Palmerston North), Mrs A. H. Gillingham (Fairlie) are guests at Wain's Hotel.
