THE FINAL DAY

QUEEN CARNIVAL CLOSING ‘‘LISTENER SPEARS" APPEAL COLLABORATION OF RADIO SERVICES To-night, at 6.45, 4ZB -will inaugurate the big “ listener speaks ” appeal by which people throughout the province will be given a chance of making a final gesture towards the £IOO,OOO rehabilitation campaign. The appeal will be continued until midnight, and from 8 o’clock station 4YA will also participate. The appeal, it is claimed, will set a new standard in radio listener participation, and full arrangements have been made whereby listeners from country districts can forward details of their donations to their local exchange, which will take the responsibility of forwarding them to Dunedin free of toll charge. If, however, country listeners wish to have their calls put through direct to Dunedin all they need to do is to ask for 4ZB, and the necessary connection will be made witliout delav, as several lines have been made available for this purpose. Such direct calls will be charged nominal toll fees. For city listeners 16 telephone lines have been provided, and listeners connected with the city exchange may ring either 14-399 or 14-359. , _ , Progress reports on the position of the queens will be made from time to time, and will be broadcast, with acknowledgments of individual donations. Assessments of totals from the various districts will also he broadcast. During the evening each of the three queens will make a- broadcast, and a special programme will be broadcast between acknowledgments. Tn all, 30 telephone lines have been installed, while more than 100 operators—typists, clerks, runners, etc.— will take some part in the appeal. MAORI CONCERT. Staged by Maoris from Moeraki, Puketeraki, and Otakou, an extremely attractive and pleasing concert, was well received by a good audience in the Town Hall last night. The concert was arranged on behalf of the Army Queen, and because of the numbers of Maoris taking part, it proved one of the best of such presentations ever put on in Dunedin. While there were many individual performers, as well us groups from each party, the major feature was the splendid choral recital given by the comprehensive parties, led in a number of stirring choruses by Miss Airini Grennell (the Army Queen). Such a massed Maori choir is distinctly novel in this city,' and the performance was a memorable one. . Hakas, various forms of poi dances, including the attractive canoe dance, action songs, polos, chants, etc., were all important features in_ a wholly delightful programme. This same combination of Maoris was heard at the Tahuna Park gymkhana to-day, and will be heard again to-night. UGLY MAN CONTEST. To-day was the final day on which votes in the ugly man contest could be oast. The positions this morning were; Messrs R. Greeuslade, M. Gilroy, J. F. Himburg. R. S. Glendining, J. Marks. A. A. Paape, J. Barnett, T. Cornish, W. Bell, F. Tyson. TO-NIGTH’S EVENTS.
