BEAU VITE'S BREEDING

Beau Vito was purchased as a yearling by Mr Ralph Stewart at 900 gs at the 1938 National yearling sales. His dam, Dominant, cost 200 gs as a yearling and was m training for throe seasons, only winning one race, a maiden at Napier. Dominant is by Martian, sire of six New Zealand Cup winners, from; Lovelorn,, who after winning three races was retired to tho stud at the end of her four-year-old career. To Martian her first foal was Nones, who had the misfortune to come out in the same season as Desert Gold, to whom she ran second in both the Derby and Oaks. Nones, however, won several good races, including the Wanganui Guineas. Lovelorn’s next foal was Menolaus, also by Martian. He vvon tho 1917 New Zealand Cup, and was one of several Cup winners descended from Hebrew Maid. A full sister to Nones and Menolaus, Lovematch, won a Hawke’s Bay Cup in 1920, and afterwards produced Moterc, winner of the 1930 Auckland Cup. Another full sister in Lovelock produced Lilock, the dam of Wilson, one of the best ,of many highclass handicap horses now racing in Australia. Loft, another daughter of Lovelorn, proved herself to he a great brood mare, as throe of her sons were Wotan (Melbourne Cup), Caine Carrington (Caulfield Cup), and Peter Jackson (Moonee Valley Cup). Not many marcs have left three such good ones. Lovelorn was by Melton from the imported mare Hebrew Maid, by Orion by Bend Or. Hebrew Maid’s dam was Jewish Maiden, by Sheen from Maid of Lorn. Hebrew Maid was not raced, and when the Westerham Stud was dispersed was two years old and had been mated with Melton. She was purchased at 150 gs on account of the late J. F. Buchanan and brought out to his stud in Canterbury, where Lovelorn was foaled. Beau Vite is thus bred to stay, and, like both Martian and Heroic, inbred to Bend Or and Hampton
