ANOTHER STRIKE THREAT
AUSTRALIAN GOAL MINING ‘ INDUSTRY DISPUTE OVER ENGINE DRIVERS' HOURS Press Association —By Telegraph Copyright SYDNEY, August 28. (Received August 28, at 1.30 (p.m.) The coal mining industry is threatened with another strike, the result or a dispute about the hours engine drivers should work during the week-end. About 850 engine drivers are affected, but if they ceased work about 14,000 miners would be thrown idle. The organiser of the Federated Engine Drivers’ and. Firemen’s Association (Mr H. Sutherland) has sent a circular to the sub-branch secretaries and delegates telling them to instruct the engine drivers and firemen that, unless their employers gave a written assurance they would recognise six hours as a full working shift on Saturdays and) Sundays, no member was to present himself for work at the weekend. The men at present work sixhour shifts at the week-end and are paid for eight hours’ work.
