Dr A. R. Falconer was a passenger! for Wellington by plane this morning to attend the annual meeting of the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the Red Cross. Mr P. W. Breen was a passenger bythe express to-day on his way to Auckland. Mr A. S. Holms came from the south by the through express to-day, being • bound for Wellington for a meeting of the Meat Board. Mr P. Neilson, M.P., Hon. T. FDoyle, M.L.C., and Hon. T. O’Byrne, M.L.C., were passengers by the through express to-day on their way to Wellington. Mr James Begg left to-day for Wellington to attend a meeting of the Meat Board. Mr James Hogg travelled_ by the through express to-day on his way to Wellington. Mr Colin Campbell, who has been appointed manager of the Blenheim branch of Messrs Nimmo and Blair, left to-day to take up his new position. Mr J. M‘G. Wilkie left to-day for Wellington. Mr H. M. Aitken was a passenger by the through express to-day, en route to Wellington. At the Wellington Competitions Society’s annual festival last night Florence Murray, of Dunedin, was . placed first with 79 points in the junior test recital for girls 14 to 16 years of age. The appointment of Lieutenant J. D. G. Ward to the post of assistant transport shipping officer, Christchurch, is notified in the ‘ Gazette.’ Second-lieutenant (temporary Captain) D. C. Crozier has relinquished the appointment of mechanical transport officer, Burnham military camp,, according to a ‘ Gazette ’ notice, and has been appointed district mechanical transport officer, Southern Military District, Christchurch. Mr G. J. Lancaster, for 20 ‘ years headmaster of the Christchurch Boys’ High School, will retire from that positiou at the end of the present school year. His resignation was accepted with deep regret by the Canterbury University College Council, the controlling body of the school, at its meeting yesterday. Tributes were paid to Mr "Lancaster’s long service to the school and to the council by the chairman (Mr A. E. Flower) and members of the council. Mr Lancaster succeeded Mr C. E. Sevan Brown as head master of the school in 1921. He was born in-Liverpool in 1875, and was brought to New Zealand by. his parents in the following year. He was educated at the Sydenham School, the Christchurch Boys’ High School, and Canterbury University College. He won three district scholarships, a junior university scholarship, and a senior university" scholarship in mathematics. He graduated master of arts with double first class honours in mathematics and chemistry iu 1896. Mr Lancaster began his teaching' career at St. John’s College, Auckland, where he was on the. staff from 1896 to 1901. Subsequently he taught at the Christchurch Girls’ High School (1902-03) and Nelson College (1904-19). In 1919 he becante senior mathematics master at", thf Christchurch Boys’ High School, and at the end of 1920 he was appointed head master. A Press Association cable - message from Sydney states that Mr Alan S, Watt, of the Department of External Affairs, has been appointed first _ seer tary of the Australian Legation in Washington. He is 38 years of age ano was a Rhodes scholar in 1921. A Wellington Association message states that Mr D. I. M'Donald, at pra sent secretary of the Canterbury Emi plovers’ Association, has been appointed general secretary of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation. A Wellington Association message states that Mr Toyokichi Fnkuma, Consul-General for Japan in New Zealand, has been ordered by his Government to return-to Japan. He will leave New Zealand within a .week’s time for Tokio. The name of his successor has not yet been announced. City Hotel guests include Mr H. J,; Johnston (Sydney), Miss A. Gunn, Miss M.
