RUGBY MATCH FOR PATRIOTIC FUNDS Dust night's meeting *>l the Managemcut Coimuittee of tiio Otago Rugby Football Union decided to grant a date in September which would not dash with the dub fixtures or the proposed match with a Burnham team tor a game between a Public .Service team and another side to be approved. It was explained that the game would lie in aid of the patriotic funds. The president, Air D. C. Jolly, was in the chair. The Secretary of the Public Service Football Committee (Mr T. E. Johnston 1 write concerning the proposed match between a Public Service team and a University team or some other approved team, and stated that it was desired to reach (inalitv regarding the fixture. 'the Otago Patriotic Council was organising a cpieon carnival, and it was suggested that the Public Service in Dunedin be invited to support tho Army queen. W'ith this in view, they were desirous of proceeding with the suggested football match. Mr D. M. Spodding explained that two scries of matches had yet to be played to complete the round, and there was the further possibility of a play-off. They did not know yet whether the match with an Army team from Burnham would eventuate, and they could not promise a definite date. Tim Chairman said that the Public Service team was prepared to play a match against an Otago team if this wens desired. Mr Cavanagh moved that the Public Service he granted a date in September which would not clash with their club fixtures or with the game against the Burnham team, and that it be left to the ehairmnn to make further arrangements with the Public Sen-ice Committee. The Chairman mentioned that ho bad been approached by some of those concerned in running the campaign on behalf of the Air Force queen regarding the possibility of a country team being pitted against an Otago team. He had explained the difficulties in assembling a team from the conn try, and that it would cost about £2OO to get the team together. Thov had then practically agreed lhat it would not be possible to play the match. The chairman’s action was confirmed. PLAYER STOOD DOWN. Ray Marshall, of the Dunedin senior team, who was ordered off by tho referee (Mr R. Quintrell) for allegedly striking a Kaikorni player in the face during last Saturday’s game, appeared before the meeting, along with the refejee, and it was decided to suspend the player for the remainder of the season. COMPETITIONS CLOSED. On the recommendation of tho Flag Committee, it was decided to close the following competitions;— Second Grade (Section 1A. —Training College, to be declared the winners. Seeond Grade (Section 2).—Union. Third Grade (Section 2U—University F. Intermediate Grade.—King’s High School. The Canterbury Football Association wrote accepting Saturday, September 7, us the date of tho return match for tho Jones Cup, to bo played at Dunedin. The secretary also advised that a fourth grade Nomads team would bo travelling at the same time to play a team from Caversham, Tho Northern Club was granted permission to play a friendly match with tbe Alataura Club, at tlio Gardens, on Saturday next.
