Miss Daphne Elder is attending the kindergarten refresher course, now being held in Wellington, where she is the guest of Mrs J. T. Martin. Mr and Mrs S. H. Downes, New Plymouth, who are the guests of Mrs E. fl. Downes, Roslyn, will return to the North Island this week. Mr and Mrs H. J. Magill and Miss Pat Magill, of Remuora, Auckland, are the guests of Mr and Mrs N. E. .Tory, Allen Court Flats, View street. Miss Dorothy Paterson, Invercargill, and Mrs Alma Hinding, Copenhagen, spent the week-end as the guests of Mr N. Paterson, Queen street, on their return to the south, after a fortnight spent at Lake Wanaka. The .Wakari branch of the Honic Economics Association held its fortnightly meeting at Mrs Gray’s residence. After the business was discussed Mrs Gray gave a demonstration on the making of smocked aprons. A dainty supper brought a pleasant evening to a close. Mrs W. G. M'Clyinont gave a tea party at her home in Maori Hill on Monday afternoon in honour of a bride-to-be, Miss Jean Abraham. The guests included Mesdames Leslie Fisher, John Ritchie, James Ritchie, Erlton Wilson, Stephen Reeves, and Misses Joan Ritchie, Peggy Brewer, and Diana Abraham, ‘ The Pearling Industry in Australia ’ was the title of the unusual and interesting address given by Mrs Sutherland at the April meeting of the St. Hilda Home Economics Association. Mrs M'Connell presided at the meeting, which was held at the residence of Mrs Spiro, Queen’s Drive. Members promised to make woollen garments to bo sent to Finland. The meeting closed with supper and a social halfhour. Mrs Eric Mannsell, of Bowler’s Creek, was' hostess at a morning tea party given at the Savoy on Saturday in honour of Miss Jean Abraham, who will leave this week for Wanganui, where her marriage will take place. The other guests were Mesdames Guy Tapley, Fraser Edmond. Forsyth Barr, and Misses Marion Crow, Peggy Brewer, and Diana Abraham. On Saturday last, at the Savoy, Miss Peg. Campbell gave a jolly “ toilet soap ” gift party for Miss Ellen Halliday, who is to be a May bride. As it was Miss Halliday’s birthday, she was also given a suitable birthday gift by the guests, who included Mesdames H. Halliday, J. Love, D. M’Lean, Stan. Greenslade, J. Hall. D. Binning, and Misses Glee Love, Marjorie Halliday, Daphne M’lntosh, Elsa Gray, and Iris M’Kenzie. On Saturday afternoon last the ladies’ section of the Anderson’s Bay bowling green was closed by invitation from the men’s section to mixed rinks and afternoon tea. Mr T. Ashton (president), in a happy speech, welcomed the Indies, and Miss Crow (president of the ladies’ section) thanked the men for the very pleasant afternoon. The tables, which were decorated with flowers in the elub colours, looked charming.

Among the many dancers at the University Dramatic Society’s very successful function in the Allen Hall on Friday night, were noticed Misses Eleanor Carswell, Judith Gallaway, Cecile Jones, Nancyo Duncan, Dorothy and Hilary Kidson, Joy Smith, Joan Scorgie, Alary, Pat, and Jacqueline Fraser, Shirley Owen-Johnstone, Monica Lindsay, Margaret Elder, Peggy Taylor, Margaret White, Helen Price. Pat Dunlop, Sheila Wilson, Winsome Wallis, Mildred Scorgie, and Leo Garvey.

The Sawyers Bay Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting on Tuesdaylast, when Mrs Bcghie presided. The motto was “It is good to be a great woman, but greater to be a good woman.” and the roll call “ A sentence from the creed that you think most striking.” A competition, ‘ Humorous Names for Everyday Articles.’ was much enjoyed. Poppy Day funds were handed in "and collectors thanked. Tho hostesses were Mesdames Hewitson and Latta.

Tho Punga Croquet Club closed its lawns for the season on Saturday last. As tho afternoon was cold and windy, play on the lawns was abandoned and a pleasant afternoon spent in the pavilion. The tables were charmingly decorated with chrysanthemums and autumn-tinted leaves. The president, Mrs Buchler, presented the trophies as follows:—A grade: Championship (Beaumont Cup), Mrs R. D. Halstead; runner-up, Mrs Horn; handicap singles, Mrs A. W. M’Donald; runner-up, Miss Brown; combined doubles, Mrs Lawn and Miss Jones; runners-up, Mesdames Buchler and M'Gregor. B grade: champion, Mrs R. Aitken; handicap singles, Mrs Hill; runner-up, Mrs Aitken. On Saturday Mr and Mrs James Ritchie, Yofk Place, gave a very jolly 5 o’clock party in honour of Miss Jean Abraham prior to her departure for Wanganui, where her marriage will take place. The hostess wore a frock of soft green wool with contrast of cyclamen striping, and tho guest of honour’an attractive frock of figured green crepe do chine. The floral decorations were chrysanthemums and Iceland poppies in shades of gold. The guests included Mr and Mrs Stephen Reeves, Ur and Mrs John Ritchie, Mr and Mrs Kenneth Nicoll, Mr and Mrs Fraser Edmond, Mr and Mrs Erlton Wilson, Mr and Mrs Guy Tapley, Miami Mrs Forsyth Barr, Mr Mrs Stewart Armitagc, Mr and Mrs G. Dressed in a frock of black georgette and lace, Mrs M. Kilpatrick received over 70 quests at the Crawford Lounge on Friday last to celebrate the coming of age of her daughter Miriam, who wore a-frock of white organdie sprigged with pink and blue flowers, over an under-skirt of pink satin. Miss Kilpatrick suitably replied to a toast proposed by her brother, Mr J. Kilpatrick, who presented her with a large key, which was afterwards autographed by tho guests. Mr J. an old friend also presented Miss Kilpatrick with a silver key. A very enjoyable time was spent with cards, games, and dancing. Items were given by Miss A. Wheeler (tap dance), Miss A. M‘Arthur (song), and musical items by Messrs S. Walters, C. Campbell, and A. Pettitt. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Messrs J. and A. Kilpatrick, while tho music was supplied by Mr A. Lattimorc, Mr Ben. Gold, and Mr Kleim (Greenfield) recited. Mr R. Lattimore gave an exhibition of sleight of hand tricks. Games and competitions filled in a most pleasant evening. The wedding cake came from Christchurch, and was a gift from Miami Mrs Miller. Other presents caino from as far north as Auckland. Mr and Mrs Stowell wore married in St. John’s Anglican Church, Roslyn, Dunedin, by the Rev. W. Fitchott. now Bishop Fitchett, on April 24, 1915.
