Mr E. E. Nicolson left tins morning for Wellington. Mr S. Ritchie, Conciliation Commissioner, passed through by the 11.35 express from the south this morning on his way to Auckland. At the Kiwi Amateur Swimming Club’s hour at the Municipal Baths last night members farewelled Signalman Reg. Geddes, of the Otago Division of the R.N.V.R., who left to-day for service in the Royal Navy. The president (Mr D. F. Watson) made a presentation to Mr Geddes of a fountain pen suitably inscribed, and referred to the recipient’s outstanding record as a champion swimmer and as a clubman during the 15 years he had been a member of the club. Practically the whole of the literary staffs of the Wellington _ daily newspapers attended a gathering held last evening to offer congratulations on behalf of the journalists of New Zealand to Mr J. H. Hall, till recently Deputy Censor, on his appointment as war correspondent to go abroad with the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Also present were the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Hon. D. G. Sullivan), the Chief Censor (Mr J. T. Paul), the manager (Mr T. M. Hinkley), and the head office staff of the United Press Association, the president (Mr A. Hardcastle), and the secretary of the New Zealand Journalists’ Association (Mr'W. N. Pharazyn), the publicity manager of the Railways Department (Mr G. G. Stewart) , representatives of periodicals and journalists from as far afield as Wanganui and Palmerston North. On behalf of the profession Mr Hardcastle presented Mr Hall with an engraved wristlet watch. Mr R’. T. Little has resigned from the editorial staff of the ‘ Otago Daily Times’ after an association of nearly 40 years with this newspaper, over 30 years having been spent in the position which he has just vacated. Yesterday afternoon the members of the editorial and literary staffs met Mr Little to wish him a long and happy retirement, and to present him with a smoker’s set as a token of the respect and affection in which he was held by all members of the literary staff. The presentation was made by the editor (Sir James Hutchison), who spoke with sincere appreciation of the unvarying high quality of Mr Little’s work, his unswerving loyalty to the newspaper, and his mary admirable qualities. Mr Little, lie said, was a journalist whose painstaking care in everything he wrote was reflected in his polished style and impeccable phraseology, while his unassuming yet engaging personality had contributed very materially to the happy relations which had existed among members of the staff. All were sorry to see Mr Little go, Sir James said, while he himself felt a personal sense of loss in the termination of an association which had existed between himself and Mr Little for over 30 years. The Reserve Bank announces that, consequent on the retirement of the chief accountant, Mr H. W. Welsh, on account of ill-health, the following appointments have been made as from' May I:—Mr W. H. E ggers chief accountant, and Mr R. W. Cox deputychief accountant. In addition, Mr A. Ross has been appointed a deputychief cashier.
