ORPHANS' CLUB
• OPENING OF SEASON The Dunedin Orphans’ Club opened its DMO season last night, the president (Bro. Arthur MacDonald) extending a hearty welcome to a large number of members. There were a few visitors also, and those too, were welcomed in tbo time-honoured manner. Telegraphed messages of goodwill were received from absent members. A varied programme was submitted and greatly enjoyed. Bro. J. LI. Duncan delivered a short but extremely interesting address, in which lie spoko of many of his experiences on the way to and in the Old Country just prior to and at the outbreak of the war. Other members who helped to entertain were: Bros. J. W. G. Pringle. R. M'Dougall, Goo. MacDonald, J. M‘Farlane (songs), T. R. Thomson (legerdemain), C. H. Russell (recitation), W. Smith (tenor horn solo), and R. P. Murphy (comedy). The club orchestra, under the baton of Bro. J. Clark, played several selections, including the Centennial March, composed by Bro. A. H. Pettitt. When the chairman informed the meeting that Bro. Thomson had won great distinction in the recent Christchurch competition in legerdemain, that member was accorded a special round of applause. A framed photograph of the retiring president, Bro. A. C. Hanlon, who had also occupied the chair ns far hack as 1905 to 1908, was added to the many photographs of club officials and members which already adorn the wmlls of the cluhroom.
During: the evening seniority badges, representing years of continuous membership, were presented to Bros. R. C. T. Evans (40 years), T. W. Dobbie. A. Fairbairn (each 30 years), F. H. Ball, T. M. Gillies. R. S. Molonov, A. MacDonald. A. M'Kay. B. H. B. Pinfold, and D. T. Boyd (each 10 years).
