FREEZING WORKERS
TERMS OF NEW AWARD The New Zealand (except Westland) freezing workers’ award has_ been issued by the Court of Arbitration. The only matter referred to/the court for settlement related to preparatory work. In other respects the award embodies the agreement of the parties in Conciliation Council and at a conference held prior to the hearing of the dispute by the court. The clause dealing with preparatory work states: “ Employers be at liberty to start men before the hours mentioned in sub-section 1 to do essentially necessary preparatory work for the day’s operations without overtime being paid for such work, provided that overtime shall be paid after the daily number of hours specified in subsection 1 has been worked. In no case shall wopl-pulling be regarded as preparatory work.” The sub-section referred to states; “ Except where otherwise specified, the ordinary hours of work shall be eight hours (including ‘ smoko ’) between 7.30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on five days of the week, and four hours (including ‘ smoko ’) between 7.30 a.m. and 12 noon on Saturdays.” Wages have been made payable retrospectively in accordance with the agreement of the parties.
