OTAGO CENTRE AGGREGATE TROPHIES AWARDED Trophies _ for most points in handicap events during the track and field season were awarded at the monthly meeting of the Otago Centre of the New, Zealand Amateur Athletic Association last - night, which was presided over by the president (Mr C. W. Clark), and speoial mention was made of the fine record of L. V. Dickison (St. 'Kilda), the New Zealand three-mile champion, who started 11 times in handicap events, gaining nine firsts and one second, and finishing out of a place only once. Competition for the aggregate trophies resulted: — Barton Cup (Belay Events).—Civil Service, 58 points, 1; Anglican, 53, .2;'Caversham, 19, 3; Moruington, 16, 4; Leith, 10, 5. Greenslade Cup (Field Events). —G. Byers (Caversham), 52i points, 1; R. M’Lay (Civil Service), 26, 2; B. Emmerson (Caversham), 24i, 3; E. Black (Civil Service), 22£, 4. Moody Cup (Sprints).—E. Hely (Anglican), 26 points, 1; B. E. Nauman (Anglican), 25, 2; H. J. Tyrie (Civil Service), 22, 3; W. A. Black (Anglican), 20, 4; A. Jones (Caversham), 19, 5. Milne Cup (Distances).— L. V. Hope Cup (Best All-round Athlete Outside of Cup Winners).—K. Emmerson (Caversham). 20-MILE RECORD. Mr Clark congratulated G. L. Austin on having established a New Zealand 20-mile

record at Dunedin on April 6, and also referred to the very fine sportsmanship shown by O. G. Gibbons in the same race. The way Gibbons had run over the first eight miles had been a credit to him, and had helped in the setting of a record. R. A. Wilson ,was also to be congratulated on the sporting spirit he had displayed. Women’s Events. The hon. secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association (Mr H. M’Corinick) advised that at the last meeting of the Management Committee a pro- 1 posal was made that the 220yds race for women should be eliminated, not only from the championship programme, but also from competition. generally, and that in the championships an event of 120yds should be substitutedMr B. R. M’Kernan said that the 220yds event was included on the Empire Games programme without harmful results, and he had observed that so long as the competitors were properly fit no more harm accrued from their running 220yds than from 120yds. A man competing in a 440yds race when only half-trained felt the effects and the same applied to a girl competitor in the 220yds. The secretary (Mr. J. G. Barnes) said that the 220yds event had proved very popular with the women athletes in Dunedin,'and no harmful effects had been observed. It was decided to advise the New Zealand Council that the centre was of opinion that as the 220yds women’s event was included on the Empire Games programme without ill effects, it should be retained on the New Zealand championship programme, and also to point out that Otago’s experience was that no harmful results accrued from girls taking part in this event. Junior and Women’* Team. Mrs M. S. M’Aughtrie, chaperone of the Otago team which competed at the New Zealand junior and women’s championship meeting at Christchurch, submitted a report stating that in the march past other representatives were dad in their provincial colours, boys and girls equally smart, while Otago’s representatives wore a motley of red and black, blue and gold, and blue and white. She suggested that the centra should give consideration .to uniformity of colour and dress for future representative meetings. Mrs M’Aughtrie congratulated the centre on its fine type of representatives and the team on the friendly spirit it had, shown. Mrs M’Aughtrie was thanked for her report, consideration of which was held over pending a report from the manager (Mr R. E. Dimick). . - A motion was carried expressing appreciation of the services on the centre of Mr T. Allen, who had relinquished his seat as a delegate. i ,
