The fifty-fifth annual meeting of the Otago Chess Club drew a good attendance of members. Mr F. J. Lang, the retiring president, was chairman. The following are the main .features of the annual report:—The balance sheet showed a slight loss on last year’s activities, but the club’s cigarette, tobacco, and sweets buffet effected a great improvement in the club’s finances. There are at present 40 club members. The results of the various tournaments held during the past year were ns follows:—Club championship, F. J. Lang; runner-up, H. Hewitt; minor championship, M. Saltzraan; runner-up, A. Clowes; handicap tournament, H. Hewitt; runner-up, A. Clowes. A hearty vote of thanks is accorded to Mr W. Herbert, the club’s energetic secretary, for supplying a handsome trophy to be awarded to the winner of the handicap tourney. Last year in the telegraphic match for the Bledisloe Cup Canterbury defeated the Otago Club, who held the trophy, and, beating Auckland, won the cup. Reference is made to the forty-eighth New Zealand Chess Congress, which was held in Wellington, at which Mr J. Boyd Dunlop won the New Zealand championship for the sixth time, and is now level with Mr W. E. Mason, of the Wellington Chess Club. Reference is made, too, to the probability of the Hungarian Chess master, Endro Steiner, coming to New Zealand, and, it is hoped, settling in Dunedin. Congratulations are extended to Messrs R. Watt and W. Lang, who have joined the benedicts during the past year, and thanks are given to Mr Herbert for his valuable service for so many years, and also to Messrs G. D. Wright, W. Lang, and D. Harris Hastings for services rendered to the club.

Taken on the whole, the club appears to be in quite a sound position, and has a good record for the past year. The following is the concluding paragraph of the report:—“ In conclusion, your committee trusts that the coming year will be one of prosperity to the club, in which every member will do his utmost to further the interest of our incomparable game. Although the nation is now at war, it is felt that no good purpose could be served in curtailing our activities, and until the occasion should arise, when other considerations must take precedence, we trust to be able to carry on successfully.” The following officials were elected for the ensuing year: —Patron, 0. Balk; president, Dr E. J. Eawnsley; past president, ,T. P. Lang; senior vice-president, .1. C. M'Ansh; junior vice-president, M. A, Clcwes; committee—H. Hewitt, R. Simp-

son, Dr Bennett, R. M'Dermid, P. D. Williamson; hon. secretary and treasurer, W. Herbert; hon. solicitor, W. Lang; auditor, G. I). Wright; hon. reporter, D. Harris Hastings. During the evening Mr W. Lang was the recipient of a wedding present, and an official farewell was accorded to Mr E. T. Evans, who has been transferred to Greymouth. The meeting was a very satisfactory one. the general opinion being that the club had improved its position during the past year.
