NEW DEFENSIVE DEVICE

A “ parachute shell ” capable of trapping aircraft in a mesh of steel wire almost five miles above the earth is being talked about in high military quarters in Washington. This new, “secret weapon, it is said, has already reached France, and is expected to be put to practical test whenever large-scale raids aie launched by the Germans. The shell is fired in the ordinary way and when it reaches its maximum altitude the nose falls from the case, pulling out hundreds of feet or steel tape which is attached to parachute. Officials are quoted as saving that a rapid fire barrage of these shells would make a network no plane could pass through.
