SUCCESS DF OTAGO WOMEN STRAIGHT WINS AT FOLD [Special to the ‘Star.’) AVELLINGTON. February 1-1. In the men’s 440 Mathicson was again unlucky and added one to a string of close seconds. Pascoe took the early lead, followed by Mathieson, and for a while the lead alternated between Newell and Mathieson. With four and a-half lengths to go Mathieson was still in the lead. Newell then came level again, and the two stayed close till with two lengths to go, when Newell took the lead again, and in a brilliant finish Mathieson came up again on the rope, but the judges decided in favour of Newell. The time, srain 19 3-ssee, is 4 l-ssec outside last year’s and B 1-osec outside Newell’s record. The women’s 100yds free style was a great battle between Misses Garvin, Purdie, and Gotlieb. All were level for the first 50yds, when Miss Garvin went ahead. Miss Purdie challenged, but failed by two feet, and Miss Gotlieb was a yard further back. The time was two and a-quarter seconds faster than last year and 1 3-ssoe outside Miss Grey’s record. The men’s 100yds breast stroke saw a duel between Dyson, Shaw, ami Geddes. At 66yds Shaw led from Geddes and Dyson, but in the last length Dyson came up and won by two feet in tunc which broke his own now record of 74 l-osec by 2-ssec. Geddes was a good third. The women’s 200 metres back stroke was a runaway victory for Miss Macdonald, who was easily 16yds ahead at the finish after leading throughout. The time was 3 l-sscc outside her own re*ord. In the women's 220yds breast stroke the holder, Miss Dunn, won easily. She led at 20yds, and increased it to two and a-half yards at the 100. The winner led at the finish by 14yds. The shield was won for Otago by the Women swimmers by the narrowest margin for years. Tn the final polo match of the series 'between Otago and AVellington Otago held the upper hand from the start, and rattled on three goals in the first half. O’Driscoll, Dyson, and Taylor were all outstanding and consistently beat the opposite numbers. Claridge, the Wellington captain, caused O’Driscoll some trouble, but the final score, 6-2, was a fair indication of the merits' of the teams.' Otago went through four games with straight wins and scored 27 goals to 6.
