WELLINGTON, February 14. For setting fire to a wooden building in a thickly-populated part of the city, Ernest Joseph Shrimpton, aged 3. a grocer, was sentenced to reformative detention not exceeding three years after a plea by counsel on account of tho man’s age and domestic unhappiness. Tho, judge said that arson was far too serious for the court to be weak and admit a person accused of the offence to probation. The sentence must bo a deterrent to other people. His Honour said, adding that the usual penalty was five years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
