TENNIS CHAMPIONS
BROMWICH IN BRILLIANT FORM (Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, 'February 14. The visiting Australian lawn tennis players attracted a record crowd of 2,200 to Wilding Park to-day, when they played exhibition matches with leading South Island players. ■ , Bromwich was in even better form than in the New Zealand championships, and beat Crawford in a brilliant match. His steadiness and retrieving ability and his ,headly hitting with his two-handed backhand delighted the crowd. Crawford served and drove with great speed, but could not shake Bromwich’s defence, and errors contributed to his downfall. Misses Wynne and Coyne played superbly in the women’s doubles match. Results:— Bromwich beat Crawford, 6-1. 6-4. Brown (Canterbury) beat Barnes, 6-4, 6-5. Miss Hardcastle beat Miss Miller (North Otago), 6-1, 6-4. Brown (Canterbury) and Bromwich heat Angas (Canterbury) ami Crawford, 6-1, 6-2. Misses Wynne and Coyne boat Mrs Hatherly and Miss Poole (Canterbury). 6-1. 6-3.
