FIRST CENTENNIAL EFFORT

SOUTH DUNEDIN XOMMUNITY SING The audience 'was in fine fettle for the first Centennial community sing, held at South Dunedin to-day, and the proceedings went with a swing. The downstairs portion of the Mayfair Theatre was packed to the doors, and, although there was more seating accommodation. upstairs, it was a very satisfactory attendance. About £l2 was collected for charitable purposes. As usual, Air “ Whang ” M'Kenzie conducted operations, while the song leader was Dr Noel North and the pianist Mrs E. Cameron. It was thought that this might he the last appearance of Dr North, but, although he has enlisted, he has not yet been called up, and the date of his departure is unknown. Therefore, it is possible that audiences will be able to greet him again when the “ sings ” start in earnest. Patrons have been asked to indicate when this should be, and the result of the inquiry is not yet known. It is expected to be after Easter, although it may be fixed for immediately before that date. The soloist to-day was Mr E. Ottrey, and Miss Myrie Hunt was heard in a piano solo, ‘ Country Gardens.’
