DICKISON WINS AGAIN

FAST THREE-QUARTER MILE RACE CENTRE'S ATHLETIC MEET TWO NEW CYCLING RECORDS . With the approach of important championship fixtures and many of the competitors ■ nearing their best form racing was keen and interesting at the weekly meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association at the Caledonian Ground last night, the highlight undoubtedly being the three-quarter-mile handicap, in which a thrilling duel was staged by the two back-markers, Theo Allen (scr), anil Len Dickison (10yds). More than usual interest attached to the race, because it was Allen’s final appearance before he goes to Masterton:, to make the attempt with V. P. Boot, C. H. Matthews, and W. A. C. Pnllar on Sautrday on the world record for the four-mile relay. Conditions last night were not of the best, the track being very soft after recent rain, and under the. circumstances Allen and Dickison both returned excellent performances. Allen looked to have the race on entering the straight, but Dickison came to light with a great burst to win by 4yds in 3min 8 4-ssec. The St. Kilda runner has shown remarkably fine form over every distance from the half-mile to three miles this season, and the worth of last night’s, run may be

gauged from the fact that the time was only a little more than Bsec outside the world record. Allen had to swing wide as he was going up in the last lap. but from scratch he got under 3niin lOsec for the distance, showing that he has come rapidly into form in the last few weeks. . There was a great, battle also in the .880yds interclub relay handicap, in which, the-New Zealand quarter-mile champion ,H. J. Tyrie, came from the back of the field and on the outside td 1 give victory ; tO'the scratch team, Civil Service, in Imin 37 l-sseo. It was a fine 1 effort on the part of Tyrie, who has - been turning in fast times from the furlong to the half-mile with consistency .throughout the season. In the ladies’ 100yds handicap, the speedy DJ.C. sprinter, Eunice Nauru an, was timed in 12sec in winning her heat from scratch, and l-ssec slower in taking the final, good going on such a' rain-soaked track. R. J. Watson, who has made a later start than usual with competitive walking, showed by winning the one mile . handicap walk in 7niin 11 2-ssee from scratch that he will need only a few'more weeks to bring him near to top form. One of the best performances of the night was that of 11. Morrison, th,e strong Carevsham middledistance runner, who won: the junior half-mile handicap from 10yds in the

fist'time of 2min 2 2-ssec, which under the track conditions was one of the best junior performances of the season. E. Hely (Anglican) won the furlong from the 4yds mark in-23 2-ssec, and iv&s second in the 75yds dash to A. M'Cartney. Winner of the hop, step, and jump handicap was T. Webster (Civil Service), better known as fallback in the Pirates senior fifteen, and a. dual winner was the Anglican junior, K. Morgan, who took the discus throw with an .actual 100 ft and also won the A grade hammer throw with 81ft 3in. Using a man’s ’ javelin, Miss H. Calder won the ladies’ javelin throw with an actual 57ft lin, her sister. Miss J. Calder, doing 58ft 9Jin. -The cycling was of a high standard, feature "of the evening being the new track record for the flying half-mile, which was established by the Invercargill rider O. Drury, who is a member of the Otago team for the New Zealand championships. Drury’s time of linin 2 ; l-ssec bettered the existing record bys 2sec, and is likely to stand for some time. Another excellent performance was.the winning one of W. Chalmers, also an Otago representative, in the three mile handicap, in which he set a new Otago record of 6min 55 l-ssec.
