LAWRENCE NOTES

GENERAL. No new pupils were received in the primary section of the Lawrence District High School when the school reopened this week. The rector, Mr E. M. Stevens, said the position was unparalleled in his experience. The roll of the High School is not so large as it was last year, although a greater number than was expected of new scholars had come from Beaiimont, Waitahuna, and elsewhere. The Clutha Valley district has not experienced for many years such a highW productive season. Wheat and oat crops promise very heavy yields, and there is a wonderful growth ot grass everywhere, and turnips and other crops for winter use are loooking particularly well, A veteran of the Boer War,' a resident of Lawrence, stimulated by the call to arms, travelled, to Dunedin in the hope that he would succeed in gaining admission .to some department ol the special force. Although he was physically fit and young for his years, he was disappointed in Bis quest. Some men of 57 years have passed the medical boards, but this particular applicant was of an age to receive the old age pension. A Dunedin High School boy, who has been fruit-picking in the Roxburgh district during the holidays, gave a display of gameness that few would tackle. He left Roxburgh at 8 a.in. to walk to his home in Dunedin in order to be back in time for the reopening of the school. He was lucky enough to secure “ lifts ” from passing motorists over short distances, and in one case travelled per dray for a short time. A MiTton resident picked him up about 2 p.m. and gave him a lift as far as Mosgiel, the boy up to that time having walked about 12 of the 60-odd miles from Roxburgh to Milton. TUAPEKA COUNTY COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Tuapeka County Council was held at Lawrence on Friday afternoon. Accounts amounting to £859 6s 6d were passed for payment. Receipts during the month totalled £928 12s , 7d, leaving a debit balance of £1,521 12s lid. It was decided to impose a'penalty of 10 per cent, oh all rates remaining unpaid after March 14. The District Engineer, advised that he was unable to aipprove of the engineer’s proposal to proceed with the suggested deviation on the old Switzer’s road until the legislation was complete. The District Engineer wrote asking the council to reconsider its decision to give no financial contribution towards improvements to the Beaumont-Miller’s Flat road, and asked whether, if the road was widened, the council would be prepared to pay one-third of the cost of gravelling it.—Received, and held over for further consideration.
