AID FOR THE FINNS

WOOLLEN GARMENTS WANTED RED CROSS APPEAL LAUNCHED Dunedin people are to be given their opportunity of doing a little to aid Finland in her great struggle for freedom and democracy, and tho form of help sought is such that every person may easily participate. The Dunedin Centre of the Red Cross organisation has received a request from Wellington headquarters seeking co-operation in providing woollen clothing for Finnish children—that is, babies to those aged 14. Tho public of Otago has never been lacking in support of a good cause, and the present drive is one which should find whole-hearted approval. Finland’s gallant standi against the mighty forces of Soviet Russia has aroused the admiration of all, and it is felt that that admiration will find- an outlet through the chance of lending material assistance. Tho New Zealand Government has already donated £5,000 towards Red Cross work in Finland, a gift which has been highly appreciated by the Finns. It is certain that they will be as grateful for any clothing donations as for financial assistance. The Finns are in urgent need of all the assistance that can be given them. The following articles of clothing will be gratefully received by tho Red Cross:—

Babies.—All manner of woollen garments.

Girls.—Woollen dresses, woollen pullovers, woollen cardigans, woollen bloomers, woollen stockings, and woollen scarves. Boys.—Woollen shirts, woollen trousers, woollen pullovers, woollen cardigans, woollen stockings, and woollen scarves.

Because summer is coming on at the other side of the world, it should not be thought that woollen garments are out of place. The summer is very brief in Finland—about two months—and even then tho weather is never excessively warm. Many of the populace will be forced to live in the open when summer does come, due to the destruction of their homes, and woollen clothing will therefore be essential. All garments should be left at, or forwarded to, the Red Cross rooms, 3 Queen’s Buildings, on Friday, February 16, from 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.; on Saturday, February 17, from 10 a.m. to noon; and on every day of tho following week at corresponding hours. A quick response will be greatly appreciated. The goods will be packed in Dunedin and forwarded to headquarters, Wellington, whence they will be shipped to British Red Cross headquarters, London, for delivery to Finland.
